Hydra~Aid™ Taste-Free Beverage Thickener
Q: Is Hydra~Aid Beverage Thickener made from commonly used ingredients that are considered safe for use?
A: Yes. All the ingredients in Hydra~Aid are widely used in the food industry and no adverse effects are known other than those that may pertain to the sensitivity of some individuals to certain foods, food additives and preservatives.
In particular respect to xanthan gum, the main ingredient in Hydra~Aid, a study conducted by Eastwood, et al, stated: “The data indicate that the ingestion of xanthan caused no adverse dietary or physiological effects in any of the subjects. In particular, all of the enzymatic and other parameters that act as sensitive indicators of adverse toxicological effects remained unchanged.”
Also notable is the statement by the European Scientific Committee on Food Safety regarding the use of xanthan gum in children with impairment of the gastrointestinal tract said: “The SCF has also agreed that the use of xanthan gum is acceptable at levels up to10g/kg in all weaning foods and up to 20kg in gluten-free, cereal- based weaning foods and up to 20g/kg in gluten-free, cereal-based weaning foods...”
Q: What is the potassium content of Hydra~Aid Beverage Thickener?
A: The potassium content of Hydra~Aid is low. There are 37 milligrams of potassium in a 26 gram packet of Hydra~Aid (only about 1.42 milligrams of potassium per gram) for thickening four ounces of a beverage to a honey-like viscosity. This is a small percent of the recommended Daily Reference Value (DRVs), published by the FDA, for potassium of 3,500mg . If potassium in an individual diet is of concern, users should also be sureto take note of the potassium content of the beverage itself.
Q: What is the Sodium content of Hydra~Aid Beverage Thickener?
A: The sodium content of Hydra~Aid is also low. There are 14mg of sodium in a 26g packet (approximately 0.538mg per gram) for thickening four ounces of beverage to honey-like viscosity and only a small percent of the DRV 2,400mg for sodium. Those on low sodium diets should also take special note of the sodium content of the beverages they consume.
Q: Is Hydra~Aid Beverage Thickener dehydrating in the body, the saliva, or is it removing water from the beverage?
A: No. Hydra~Aid is specifically made to help improve hydration by providing a non-flavored, clear thickener and it has no dehydrating effect on the body or saliva. Hydra~Aid is supplied in “pre-hydrated” gel form in which all ingredients are dissolved in the water contained in the gel and, unlike powder thickeners, Hydra~Aid does not draw water from the beverage to which it is added. In fact, water from the gel is actually added to the beverage.
Q: Can Hydra~Aid Beverage Thickener be used by diabetics?
A: Hydra~Aid does not contain sugar and, unlike corn starch or modified food starch thickeners, it contains no digestible carbohydrates and will not contribute to blood glucose levels. However, all food products used by diabetics should be approved by their physician.
Q: Is Hydra~Aid Beverage Thickener gluten-free?
A: Yes. All Hydra~Aid contents are “certified” gluten-free.
Q: Does Hydra~Aid Beverage Thickener meet the restrictions of a “low-carb” diet?
A: Yes. The very slight amount of carbohydrate in Hydra~Aid is not utilized by the body and should be of no concern to those on low-carb diets. In fact, xanthan gum (the main ingredient of Hydra~Aid) is used in many low-carb food products today.
Q: Is Hydra~Aid Beverage Thickener constipating?
A: No. It actually acts as a bulking agent in terms of its effects on fecal dry and wet weight and on transit time.
Q: Are there any studies related to xanthan gum?
A: Yes. Xanthan gum is used in a wide number of food products today and has also been used for a number of years as a beverage thickener in the U.K. and in Australia. In addition, several other references are cited in the World Health Organization’s Food Additive Series 21 and in subsequent materials published by that body and others.
Q: Does Hydra~Aid Beverage Thickener meet the suggested ranges for the nectar-like and honey-like viscosities outlined in the ADA's National Dysphagia Diet (NDD)?
A: Yes, Hydra~Aid was designed to meet the NDD’s suggested ranges for viscosity. However, as with any thickener used for dysphagia, clinicians must use their professional judgment to establish the amount of thickener needed for each person in their care.
